The Power of Prayer

For thousands of years, prayer has been used in times of adversity. The act of prayer itself has been associated with good health, quality of life, and lower levels of psychological distress in healthy people. Prayer has been defined as “communication with God as an experience and expression of the human spirit”. It allows people to offer praise and thanks, ask for help or guidance, affirm their faith, express hopes and fears, and find solace, closure, and support from other worshippers.

Prayer can be a private or public behavior. People can pray either individually or within a group setting. One can pray or be prayed for by others, and one can pray anywhere. While the effects of prayer on health have been understudied, prayer seems to be frequently used by cancer patients to cope with their cancer.

While spirituality is known to be a significant coping strategy in cancer patients overall, breast cancer patients in particular make significant and explicit use of prayer and other spiritual healing approaches as part of their response to their illness. Prayer is seen as being protective as well as comforting during illness. Prayer, reading the Bible, and the church are a major part of our lives.

It was a bit of a shock. I had a number of them before, but this time I got an email saying I needed to go back and have another test as there was something not quite right.

I went back to work and called my hubby, trying to be strong, but crying and telling him I might have breast cancer but I had lunch, and calmed down. I just prayed for God to help me be calm with whatever followed. I prayed for Him to give me the strength to deal with whatever I had to deal with.

I didn’t think anything about it as this is quite common. So, I went back and had another scan in the morning. I was told the results looked suspicious and I needed to come back Friday afternoon and have a biopsy taken.

I went back and had the biopsy, quite calmly, and found out a few days later that I did have breast cancer, three tumors, all less than 2cm in size.

Prayer worked to guide me from the depression caused by breast cancer. Our Lord guided me to contentment with the changes made to my body.

“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another that you may be healed. The fervent prayer of a righteous man is effective and has great strength.” – James 5:16

Lord, I come before you today in need of your healing hand. In you all things are possible. Hold my heart within yours, and renew my mind, body, and soul. I am lost, but I am singing. You gave us life, and you also give us the gift of infinite joy. Give me the strength to move forward on the path you’ve laid out for me. Guide me towards better health, and give me the wisdom to identify those you’ve placed around me to help me get better.

Think, Lord, of our friend who is ill, whom we now leave to Your compassionate hand. Comfort all those upon their sickbed, and ease their suffering. We beg for deliverance, and submit that no healing is too hard for the Lord, if it be His will. We therefore pray that You bless our friend with Your loving care, renew her strength, and heal what ails her.

All our times are in your hand, Lord. All diseases come at your call, and go at your bidding.

You, Lord, redeem our life from destruction, and crown us with loving kindness and tender mercies. We bless you, Lord, who has heard our prayer, and commanded deliverances for our friend, your servant, who has been under breast cancers afflicting hand. She was brought low, but you, Lord, have helped her. May she not only live, but declare the works of the Lord!

As Thou have delivered her eyes from tears, her feet from falling, and her soul from death, may she daily inquire: What shall I render unto the Lord for all your benefits towards me, and resolve to offer unto you, Lord, the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and to call upon the name of the Lord. May we ever remember that recovery is only a reprieve and that someday we will go to our rest in the Lord. May we therefore secure the righteous path and live with eternity ever in our view.

Lord, look upon me and all others with eyes of mercy, may your healing hand rest upon me, may your life giving powers flow into every cell of my body and into the depths of my soul, cleansing, purifying, restoring me to wholeness and strength for service in your Kingdom.

Dear Lord, you are the only source of health and healing, the Spirit of calm and the central peace of this universe, grant to me such a consciousness of Your indwelling and surrounding presence that I may permit You to give me health and strength and peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Your scripture, Lord, says that you heal all diseases and whoever believes in You will not perish but have an everlasting life. Strengthen me, Lord, in this time of illness. Sustain me as I lay sick in this bed. When You were on Earth, you did all things good and healed all kinds of sickness. You healed those who had diseases. You died and rose for our sins and that we may have eternal life, Lord. I believe in my heart that You are here with us today and that with Your most holy power will remove all sicknesses and evils that roam the earth. Let it be done in Your glory, Lord. We praise and glorify Your name, Amen.
